What does it mean for a product to be organic?
The United States Department of Agriculture defines organic as "a
labeling term that indicates that the food or other agricultural
product has been produced through approved methods that
integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster
cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve
biodiversity".

How can I tell if a product is organic?
Companies with certified organic products will usually display the
official USDA certification logo. Remain skeptical of websites and
companies that claim to specialize in such products that do not
display
this logo or can’t answer questions about how they have
obtained their certification. The following is an excerpt from Kit
Arbuckle's
National Geographic article "What Is the Difference
Between Natural Products & Organic Products?" She writes, "The
organic label means that the product contains at least 95 percent
organically produced and processed ingredients. You might also see
a label with a percentage indicating how much of the product
qualifies as organic. Any product containing less than 70 percent
organic ingredients cannot use the organic label. These products
can only list individual ingredients as organic. Organic products must
also indicate the certification agency and indicate each organic
ingredient on the label".

So is there such thing as an organic mattress?
If assembled solely from organic materials in a certified facility, it is
possible to have an organic mattress. However, the
federal standard for
flammability has made it very hard for manufacturers to produce a 100%
organic mattress. Bear in mind, there is not currently a governing body
that oversees the organic labeling of mattresses specifically. That is why
it is important to do your homework and ultimately purchase your
mattress from a company you trust.

There are a lot of materials that go into a mattress; cotton/fiber batting,
foam, springs, casing fabric, ticking, tufting, etc. Ask questions about the
material
and the manufacturing process when trying to determine how
organic a mattress really is. Some companies claim an organic title due
to their use of natural materials like soy, latex, wool and cotton. These
materials can be very expensive in raw form so some manufacturers opt
to blend them with petroleum based foam in order to provide suppliers
with a product that can be marketed as "natural" at a lower cost.
Similarly, it has become common for manufacturers to blend cotton and
or wool batting with polyester. So, unfortunately there is a lot of grey area
in determining just how organic any one specific mattress may be. Many
companies make valid efforts to minimize the amount of non-natural
material in their product but the fact remains that in order to produce a
mattress that complies with federal law, it will very likely contain some
degree of non-organic make-up.

How do Custom Futons’ mattresses compare in all of this?

Our custom mattress supplier, Otis Bed, provides mattresses which comply with flammability laws without resorting to the use of chemicals and
spray-on flame retardants that are known to be dangerous. Also, they purposely avoid using treatments the EPA has identified for their
2015 full
risk assessment. They have proven to be an innovator when adjusting to the increasingly stringent standards for flammability. They use tried and
true polyurethane foams and polyester fibers which provide a longer lasting mattress that will not take on compression pockets like those typically
seen in blended cotton/poly fiber and or wool bating. Further, their batting is dust free and therefore allergy friendly.

Bottom line, Otis Bed products, are not
certified organic but they are safe. If you want a mattress that is considered organic, we recommend
locating a Savvy Rest retailer near you. Savvy Rest products will be your best option for an organic futon cushion but will come at a much higher
cost. No matter which mattress you choose, please know this; we go out of our way to make sure our futon selection has healthy objectives while
also providing reasonable pricing, compliance with flammability laws, and long-term durability.
